Covpress Ltd. Company History
The Jackson family founded Coventry Radiator and Presswork Company in 1890. The first premises in Trafalgar Street, produced parts for the burgeoning motor industry. Expansion took the company to its present day site at Canley in 1930.
Press shops three and four were constructed in 1954 and 1962 respectively and the company soon became the largest manufacturer of radiators in Britain.
The first takeover of the company was in 1965. The new name was Associated Engineering and a period of unrest caused by further corporate battles led to further name changes. In 1980 the company split and the Presswork division became Armstrong Equipment followed by Armstrong Presswork in 1985. Following a management buy out in 1987, Coventry Presswork was born.
The French group Lebranchu, founded in 1925, acquired Coventry Presswork in 1991. The company then became a subsidiary of Sofedit SA in 1994. Sofedit SA, based in Paris and part of the multinational Trianon Industries Corporation continued to invest in Coventry Presswork and in 2001 we saw the name change to Sofedit UK Ltd.
In 2004 the company, having left the veil of Sofedit following a management buy-in with investors G.I.L., returned to its autonomous roots.
In 2005 Covpress Ltd acquired the Stratford on Avon based NCJ Holdings Ltd and relocated the business into Coventry, forming Covpress Holdings Ltd. Today the company continues to trade under Covpress and NCJ.
2009, a year of recession, saw an investment of £3.5m in a new 2500T Transfer press.
This investment has continued in 2010 with the establishment of a new Chinese Engineering Division in Shenzhen China to support the increased demand for low cost tooling. 2010 also saw the investment in a new powder coat facility at the Canley plant in addition to new coil feeders.
Today, Covpress Holdings maintains its position as a world class supplier for pressings and assemblies to both the automotive industry and non automotive sectors across the UK and Europe.
